Using a VLE for Transition
Where a district or local authority adopt a common VLE there is a great opportunity to use it as an aid to transition. Teachers from the new school or phase create a project using their resources and methods. The familiar teachers of the earlier phase help deliver the project and help acquaint the students with the methods of the new school.
In the first year of transition from Key Stage 2 to 3 children make relativley little progress. Indeed many students make no progress at all and some actually regress. Any method that can reduce that trauma and dislocation has to be worth consideration.
Thornden School in Hampshire used the Forum function on its Uniservity VLE to help transition by putting Year 6 students in contact with year 7.
