Off-Site
There are a number of scenarios where students will need to be educated off site. Some schools have a significant traveller community, there are chidren who are long term sick but able to do some work, especially important in years 10 and 11. There are those students who are excluded especially where they are waiting for governors meetings.
The assumption and pre-condition here is that they have access to a computer and Internet access. The work will need to be made available in a form that they can open. Not everyone has Microsoft Office and when they do it may well be a version that does not recognise the files offered. PDF, SWF and Open Office files or files in RTF are the best approach. Marking needs attending to, so a method of posting or emailing files needs to be explained on the VLE page.
It is also perfectly possible to make a chat room available to them during scheduled lesson times so that they can take part in the discusssions. Some VLEs offer online whiteboards as well although they may be difficult to include in a Live lesson. A forum can be included so that they can interact assymetrically at other times.
