Data Gathering

Using the VLE to gather Information

The single greatest use of VLEs by most schools is data gathering, measuring student progress. Typically a class has about six weeks on a project and then a test at the end. The VLEs are well placed to do this. The results gathered can be shared with the MIS if that is possible with your particular installation. This is a subject that will gone into in greater detail on the VLE pages.

If a subject area has restricted access to computers either through a departmental computer suite or class set of Laptops, then either everyone has an ICT based module once every few weeks or the ICT facility is primarily used as a testing area.

the tests can be simple tests for assessing knowledge gathered in the classroom or they can test a students ability to reason from information provided to them.

In the example above a student can go from one question to another unil they get an answer wrong. At this stage they are re presented with the information so they can try again. This is of course not measuring what they already know but informing them of new material.
