Moodle FLV player

For some time I have been downloading flv files from youtube and the like, or more usually going to http://clipnabber.com/ and converting them for use in Moodle. Recently we have used the Moodle flv player and it is great, the advantages of a small file not embedding the file and being at the mercy of a dodgy Internet connection.

OFSTED and the Nationals

In OFSTEDs recent publication there has been something of a sting in the tail and it refers to the OCR Nationals in ICT although they are not mentioned by name. The report says that the qualification does not extend the level of knowledge beyond the level reached at Key Stage 3 (age 13) and to a large extent that is true of the first compulsory unit ‘ICT in Business’ but as anyone who has taught that unit knows the significence is not in its depth but in its breadth. It covers, Organisation, Email, Internet, DTP, Presentations, Spreadsheets, Databases, Mailmerge and it is a struggle to get the wide range of documents completed in the time.

Free Rice – a fun vocabulary builder

A suprise hit at our school this year, the site builds vocabulary bit by bit. students are offered a list of words to decide the meaning of. The program quickly finds their level and then adds one more difficult word every 5 or 6 words. If they get it wrong they are given the answer and then the question reappears a few minutes later.
