A very useful discussion that continued after I left. As most schools in the UK adopt VLEs the need for defining and working on relevant pedagogies is becoming more pressing. A VLE is not an Intranet or document repository. The Information architecture at the back of the VLE – when associated with a computer of some sort – is capable of completely changing learning. One teacher observed that VLEs were common in Universities and recent entrants into teaching are suprised not to find them in schools.
These bold assertions are made in the presentation notes
there are two main pedagogies
- Independant Learning where computers are always available
- Blended Learning where computers are available from home, but data projectors in class.
- Independant Learning will increase attainment by at least 50%
- Blended Learning will attract 25% additional attention out of class.

Moodle – a thousand hits from home

We are in our third year with Moodle and it is now used for year 7 students (11-12 years old) for about a quarter of their lessons plus other years and other subjects apart from ICT. On Thurday I checked the logs for the week and they were – to me at least astounding. On Monday there were 1100 hits on Moodle after the school closed for the day. 25% of all the activity for the whole day. Read more
