Youtube – ‘why do we have to do ICT’

I ran a survey before Christmas on the schools Moodle asking two different sets of classes their motives in ICT. Those students who had chosen to do ICT as an exam subject, commiting 3 or 6 hours a week, and those who did one hour a week as a compulsory subject. I asked the volunteers (among other things) ‘Why had they chosen ICT as a subject’ a large majority gave variations on ‘ It is important for the/my future’ Read more

A very useful discussion that continued after I left. As most schools in the UK adopt VLEs the need for defining and working on relevant pedagogies is becoming more pressing. A VLE is not an Intranet or document repository. The Information architecture at the back of the VLE  – when associated with a computer of some sort – is capable of completely changing learning. One teacher observed that VLEs were common in Universities and recent entrants into teaching are suprised not to find them in schools.

These bold assertions are made in the presentation notes

there are two main pedagogies

  • Independant Learning where computers are always available
  • Blended Learning where computers are available from home, but data projectors in class.
  • Independant Learning will increase attainment by at least 50%
  • Blended Learning will attract 25% additional attention out of class.

In common with most exam subjects that I have taught, I initially taught everyone all that they would need to get the highest grade – in this case a distinction, an A grade. The normal process is to mark the result and see who ‘gets it’ they would logically get a distinction and the remainder would be marked by the degree to which they failed to do what was asked of them,
